Your Aadhaar card must be linked to mutual funds, bank accounts, EPFs, PANs, and life insurance. As a result, the Aadhaar card has gained importance. Given the significance of this and the potential for abuse, UIDAI introduced the ability to check online who and when used your Aadhaar card. The name of this service is “Aadhaar Authentication History.”
Aadhaar authentication: what is it?
When a service provider, such as a bank, insurance company, mutual fund company, or telecom operator, requests identification proof, the Central Identities Data Repository (CIDR) cross-checks the Aadhaar number and the holder’s demographic or biometric data. This process is known as Aadhaar authentication.
Numerous methods, including biometrics (fingerprint and IRIS), demographics, and a one-time password sent to a registered email address or mobile phone, can be used to complete Aadhaar authentication.
- Demographic authentication: The demographic data of the Aadhaar number holder in the CIDR is compared with the Aadhaar number and demographic information that were obtained from the Aadhaar number holder.
- One-time pin-based authentication: A One Time Pin (OTP), which has a limited validity period, is generated by other suitable methods or sent to the email address and/or mobile number of the Aadhaar number holder who is registered with the Authority. During authentication, the owner of the Aadhaar number must provide this OTP along with his Aadhaar number, which must match the OTP that the Authority generates.
- Biometric-based authentication: The biometric data and Aadhaar number that a holder submits are compared to the biometric data that is linked to that holder in the CIDR. Based on biometric data kept in the CIDR, this could be authentication using fingerprints, iris, or other biometric modalities.
- Combining two or more of the aforementioned authentication methods is known as multi-factor authentication.
For a given service or business function, a requesting entity (such as banks, insurance companies, EPFs, or mutual fund companies) may select the appropriate mode or modes of authentication from the list above, including multiple factors of authentication to improve security.
It is made clear that only OTP and/or biometric authentication may be used for e-KYC authentication in order to prevent confusion.
